Park, Play and Portillo's

Here's last week in a nutshell:

A trip to a neighborhood park turned in to a kiddie jackpot:

They found an abandoned box of toys, which Sidney demanded we "rescue." After an immersion in a bucket of bleach-and-water, they've been a nice addition to grandma's toy box. And the kids now call it "Lucky Park."

With the temps tickling the triple digits, we sought out cool indoor activities. Enter: ice skating! Is that lady having a small seizure? No! It's just Kris on the ice for the first time in 15 years. But I was all Hamill in my head. Is that Bambi-on-ice? Nope, just a Florida-born kid giving it his best shot. By the end of the 90-minute session, we could cross the ice holding hands without a spill. And he wants to go back.

Some Chuck E Cheese time produced enough tickets for...

...a very cool Ben 10 card game (which resembles War with alien variations), which has gotten lots of play time.

Another day: some pool time at the Schultz's community swimming hole.

And painting Charlie's nails.

And, oh, momma happy. Finally, the first hot dog meal of the visit.

We sought retreat from a sizzling day at the DuPage Children's Museum - with about half the population of DuPage County.

In the wood shop area, Ben produced his "flying car" with scrap wood, bottle caps, nails and a hammer (and safety goggles). No smashed fingers or punctured skin, and I hardly helped at all. Nice going, kid!
