Family and familiarity

I awoke before 6 a.m. the second morning in town to my girl saying she didn't feel well. That statement was followed minutes later by barf on the kitchen floor. After a few rounds of illness she fell asleep on the stairs and I mopped. Still pumped up and ready to DO something after three days of sitting, I left her in the good care of Grama Karen and took Ben to my old high school's track to get moving. My boy likes to run, so he motivated me down the long sides and kept me company walking the curves.
Here we are, flexing our Mighty Mighty Hornets muscles.

The next day, with Sid feeling much better, we moved on to Elmhurst to see Steve's folks. Ben brushed up on his chess game.

And met his adorable cousin Lexi for the first time.

Sid gave her a thrill on the swings. We're looking forward to Lexi's 1st birthday party later this month.

Over the weekend we visited my family in Naperville. Ben didn't even make it out of the driveway after we pulled in. Started shooting hoops right away, and Uncle Matt jumped in to play too.

The huge oaks in the yard provide lovely shade to retreat to, and make a patchwork with the sky that I could never get tired of watching. Sights like this are a big part of why we made this journey: small familiar views, smells - even the local Chicago accent - just make my heart feel good. And I love to watch my kids experience it all too.

We then celebrated Sidney's birthday (belatedly, but great excuse for cake and presents!)

A few days later, after seeing the movie Brave (which features a few bears), Ben wanted to see Grampa Marc's bearskin and hear the hunting story that goes with it. He was seemingly mesmerised by the tale - uncharacteristically still. Moments later, Ben was projectile puking  - thankfully NOT on the bear!! It was not a lingering illness, and he was himself again by the next day.
