May in a Nut Shell

Better than a basket of flowers at our door on May Day, we got a long visit with Uncle Randy and Teresa. They liberated Steve's new car to us from it's former home in southern Illinois. Their 1,400 mile road trip ended at the local sandbar. Cayson and Ben in the bird cage at the OV. Haven't seen one of those at Toys R Us, but we may be on to something...Then Steve guided Sam Kaufman to the Largest Tarpon and overall Third Runner Up in the Golden Fly Invitational Championship. They've put a lot of time in together on the water over a few years, and their efforts nicely rewarded in this tournament. Congratulations! Before we knew it, May 28 was here marking Sidney's first year. Here, she models a frock worn 34 years ago by momma, on her 1st birthday (made by Sid's Grama Karen). Also Jim Friedman's birthday (Sid's Great-Uncle), we celebrated the happy occasion with dinner, cake and a table full of family. Ben elected himself official present opener.
The bow. Oh, the bow!
Enough of this belly crawling! The day after her birthday Sidney figured out the knee component of getting around on all fours.
As per her Uncle Jim, "This is probably the best meal of her life -- it doesn't get any better than cake on the first birthday!" Well said.

Presenting, the Graduate!

A big "rock on!" goes to my brother Matthew Baleiko, who graduated from Loyola University of Chicago this May. Nice work and good luck, Matt. Congratulations to Dad and Mary, too!

Spring Break, Part 2: FINALLY!

Time to finish the Spring Break edition before we're all watching fireworks and eating fresh sweet corn! Here are a few more favorites from our April visit to the Chitown area.
Sidney and Sami Schultz became fast friends. The Ferris wheel at Navy Pier gave us a bird's eye view of the skyline (and some butterflies in our tummies).
Auntie Manders showed Ben how to decorate sugar cookies for Easter, and let him sample plenty of frosting.
The relic Marbleworks is still a hit with the kids!
Every time that an egg went in white, and came out a vibrant color, Ben couldn't suppress a genuinely wonderous, "Whoooooa! It's orange now!"
Eighteen times.Beautiful and tastey results.
We paid a visit to the Shedd Aquarium on a chilly morning......and made several trips to Loyola U, to watch Matt play in his final season of volleyball.
All that activity can make a real kid tired, but real happy, too.
